Mushrooms are one of the most fascinating food types.

They grow incredibly fast and in some of the most oppressive conditions, and they can be found just about everywhere around the world.

You’ll find mushrooms in nearly every form of traditional medicine—Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Pacific Islander, and more!

The Reishi mushroom is one of the most beneficial of all. Between its excellent nutrient profile and its surprising number of health benefits, it’s a mushroom that will improve your health in so many ways.

Below, we take a deep dive into this marvelous mushroom and how it will make you a much healthier person!

What Makes Reishi Mushrooms So Amazing?

There have been a number of studies done into these marvelous mushrooms, and all of them agree that the nutrient profile of Reishi mushrooms is wonderful.

One study made a list of the many nutrients found in Reishi mushrooms, and that list included:

  • Amino acids (protein)

  • Alcohols and phenols

  • Peptides

  • Triterpenoids

  • Polysaccharides and oligosaccharides

  • Dietary fiber

  • Minerals (like iron, selenium, copper, zinc, and iodine)

Quite the high nutrient content, all in one marvelous little mushroom package!

The Benefits of Reishi Mushrooms

There is a lot of debate around whether or not Reishi mushrooms can provide all the healing benefits the research claims they can. According to Medical News Daily, both the Susan G. Komen foundation and the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center have found little scientific evidence proving that Reishi mushrooms can help improve cancer, reduce fatigue, combat inflammation, and do all the other things that have been claimed.

On the other hand, a number of studies have been conducted with positive results, and it’s those studies that provide evidence that these mushrooms can be a marvelous health remedy.

For example, one study into breast cancer survivors found that 59% of the women were taking Reishi mushroom supplements. While this is more correlation than causation, there is a notable link between the use of these mushrooms and a higher chance of surviving cancer.

Test tube studies have indicated that Reishi mushrooms contain active properties that can actually kill off cancer cells. While these tests haven’t been done on any live humans, the fact that they work in test tubes does provide hope that the cancer cell-killing mechanisms are the same and can be effective at helping the human body fight cancer.

Reishi mushrooms have been proven to help balance hormone levels in men, particularly the hormone testosterone. This may be beneficial to men who are suffering from or trying to recover from prostate cancer, as testosterone plays a role in the progress of this particular type of cancer.

One study found that Reishi mushrooms could help to reduce the size and number of tumors in the large intestines. It’s been known to be potentially effective as an aid to combat colorectal cancer, as well. Thanks to the mushroom’s ability to raise white blood cell count, it can help the body fight off the cancer on its own.

Reishi mushrooms have also been linked to improvements in fatigue and depression. One study  found that they could help to treat a condition called neurasthenia, which includes symptoms like fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and aches and pains. Just 8 weeks of taking Reishi mushroom supplements helped to raise the energy levels of the participants, combatting their fatigue and improving their overall wellbeing.

A study on Reishi mushrooms found that breast cancer survivors experienced less fatigue after just 4 weeks of taking the supplement, and their quality of life was greatly improved. There were also less reports of depression and anxiety thanks to the mushroom.

Reishi mushrooms, like all mushrooms, are loaded with dietary fiber and other nutrients that can help to control cholesterol. It’s no surprise, then, that studies have indicated that the mushroom can raise HDL cholesterol and lower triglyceride levels in those taking it. However, other research found no benefits in those with healthy cardiovascular function, so the science is still unclear on that one.

What is perfectly clear, however, is the fact that Reishi mushrooms are excellent immune-boosters! Test-tube studies have highlighted the mushroom’s ability to raise your white blood cell levels, and can positively alter the inflammation pathways in your white blood cells. Specific molecules in Reishi mushrooms can increase your natural killer cells, which will make your white blood cells overall more effective at protecting your body from outside threats.

The mushrooms can also raise the levels of lymphocytes, cells that help to fight infection and reduce your risk of cancer. While the science wasn’t quite clear on how it worked or if it would work long term, there were results enough to make it fully evident that Reishi mushrooms are an excellent addition to a healthy immune-boosting diet.
