Think about it: you’re at work, at the store, or enjoying your vacation, when suddenly your back condition flares up and you feel that sharp spike of pain in your spine. Your mobility are immediately limited, every movement feels like it’ll just make things worse, and you can’t focus on the task at hand because of your worries about your back.

That’s when you need some ways to relieve back pain quickly and effectively!

5 Ways to Relieve Back Pain

Apply Heat and Cold – When you feel a sudden back spasm or sharp pain in your lower spine, you need to realize that the damage has already been done. Some muscle strain or ligament sprain has already occurred, and your body is responding to the pain by triggering the inflammatory response. Inflammation is necessary to protect your body from further damage. However, it can also slow down healing and increase the stiffness in your lower spine.

As soon as you feel the pain in your back, apply an ice pack to the painful area. Do it as quickly as possible so that you can stave off inflammation. The less swelling occurs around the damaged area, the easier it will be for your body to send nutrient-rich blood to repair the damage. Ice will essentially stop the swelling in its tracks.

After 15-20 minutes of ice treatment, switch out to a heat pack. The heat will increase blood flow to the area, helping your body to deliver more blood and nutrients critical for repairing whatever damage was caused.

Give the heat 15-20 minutes to work, then switch back to ice to both manage pain and keep swelling away. Repeat this switch-off for the next 2-3 hours maximum. Using hot and cold therapy can drastically reduce pain and stiffness and accelerate healing time.

Walk Around – It may sound counterintuitive, but it really works! Walking helps to elongate and stretch the spine, loosen up tense muscles, and even help to realign the joints. The exercise will also trigger the release of endorphins, which help to dull the pain—they’re basically your body’s painkilling chemical!

While you’re applying the hot and cold treatment, resist the urge to sit down or lie on your back. Instead, walk around, and let the movement help to dull the pain and restore normal function to your spine. You won’t eliminate the pain, but a bit of walking can go a long way toward speeding up healing time.

Take a Painkiller – When the pain hits, your body is going to trigger the inflammatory response we mentioned above, swelling up the tissues around the damaged area to protect against further damage—but also slowing down healing. One of the best things you can do immediately following the onset of pain is to take an anti-inflammatory painkiller.

Tylenol, Advil, and aspirin are all commonly used medications that can help to combat the pain and prevent inflammation. Talk to your doctor to find out which they recommend (and in what dosage), and make certain not to take too many painkillers too often. They’re not the end-all to your problem, but they can help to reduce swelling, combat pain, and minimize stiffness immediately following a flare-up.

Apply a Pain-Relieving Cream – There are a number of pain-relieving analgesic creams that can help to combat the pain directly at the source, as well as reduce swelling. For example, Tiger Balm is made with capsaicin, the nutrient from spicy red chili peppers that will increase your body temperature, increase blood flow, and minimize pain. Vicks VapoRub contains menthol, a natural painkiller. Arnica creams have anti-inflammatory properties that can help with pain management. CBD balms and creams are made with cannabidiol, compounds from the cannabis plant that actually decrease the intensity of the pain signals sent to your brain.

Always keep one of these creams handy, and apply it to the painful area as soon as possible.

Schedule a Chiropractor or Doctor Visit – If you see a chiropractor, it’s a good idea to schedule a visit as quickly as possible. Chiropractors can manipulate your spine in such a way to reduce the pain of muscle strains, joint tears, herniated discs, and many other injuries.

If you’d prefer, you can also pay a visit to your GP, and see what they recommend for treating your back pain. They may prescribe stronger medications to help combat more severe pain, or recommend acupuncture, nerve stimulation, or any number of other treatments to help restore full function to your back.

Your doctor may also be able to help you discover the underlying cause of the pain (not just muscle spasm, but some structural problem or greater cause for concern than you previously realized). It’s a good idea to talk with an expert after you experience back pain.
