IS CBD GOOD FOR ARTHRITIS?

A lot of people have been asking the question, “Is CBD good for arthritis?”

With the popularity of cannabis-derived products skyrocketing, there’s a lot of curiosity about what exactly CBD can and can’t do.

Well, you’re in luck! We’re going to take the time below to explore exactly how CBD works for your joints, and whether or not it can be a viable solution to combat the pain and stiffness common with arthritis.

We’ll dive into the facts, clear up the myths, and take a good, hard look at the science so you’ll once and for all have the answer to the question, “Is CBD good for arthritis?”

Is CBD Good for Arthritis: Understanding CBD

Before we can answer the big question, we need to take a look at what exactly CBD is, how it’s different from marijuana, and how it might benefit you.

First of all, let’s start with the “what is CBD?”

CBD stands for “cannabidiol”, a compound that is found in the cannabis plant. Typically, CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant in the form of an oil, which you can then take orally.

Now, the important thing to know is that CBD is NOT the substance that will give you the “high” feelings. That is the work of THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. There are specific receptors in the body that respond to THC and create the “high” feeling, and there are specific cannabinoid receptors in the body that respond to the presence of CBD. The results, however, are VERY different!

Is CBD Good for Arthritis: Breaking Down CBD’s Benefits for Arthritis

There are many ways that CBD can benefit the body. However, in this post, we’re going to focus specifically on how CBD will improve arthritis.

As you know, arthritis is characterized by swelling and stiffness in the joints as a result of decreased joint tissue. This is caused by either osteoarthritis (called the “wear and tear” arthritis”) or rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune condition) wearing away the cartilage that cushions the joints.

For decades, researchers have been trying to find pain-relieving solutions and treatments that could reduce the swelling and stiffness caused by arthritis. One of the most interesting—and newest—treatments to be discovered is CBD.

Important Note: Thus far, all of the studies done into CBD for arthritis are animal studies. There have been no human trials to date, which means most of the evidence is based on the results of testing CBD on lab animals. That’s not to say that CBD won’t work on humans, just that there haven’t been direct tests with quantifiable results conducted on humans.

In the above-mentioned animal trials, there were a number of pretty fascinating results discovered thanks to CBD:

  • In 2011, one study found that giving rats CBD helped to reduce their perception of pain, thanks to CBD’s ability to reduce signals transmitted via the cannabinoid receptors that are part of our body’s nervous system.

  • In 2014, another study discovered that the encocannabinoid system in our bodies plays a central role in detecting and transmitting arthritis pain signals. Using CBD helped to decrease the pain signals relayed as a result of the arthritis.

  • A 2016 study looked at what happened when CBD was applied to the skin, and found that it reduced pain-influenced behaviors in the tested animals. The rats were able to move more freely and were more active thanks to the pain-mediating benefits of CBD.

  • One study from 2017 found that the pain and nerve damage caused by osteoarthritis could be improved by CBD. Local administration of the CBD decreased the pain in the lab rats involved in the testing.

These studies all specifically examined the effects of CBD on arthritis, and the results were pretty promising!

However, more studies have been conducted on chronic pain in general, and CBD has been proven a highly effective option for combatting chronic pain.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, CBD is a treatment that has been shown to have “modest” benefits for chronic pain—not just the pain triggered by arthritis, but a wide range of chronic conditions.

Studies have found that CBD helps to reduce nerve-related pain in humans (not just animal tests!), and that CBD can reduce inflammation and pain—both of which are problems with arthritis. (Note: Some of the research is condition-specific, but the results are very likely to translate across many conditions that cause inflammation and pain.)

There is a lot more research that needs to be done, but the preliminary results show a great deal of promise. There is hope for those suffering from chronic conditions like arthritis, conditions that cause a lot of pain and discomfort.
